STarDew Valley in 3d
As a kid I spent days on end playing 16-bit games like Harvest Moon on emulators, furiously watering my pixelated radishes to sell them for gold while IRL, plants in the garden lay waste in the blistering heat.
Stardew Valley has been a great nostalgic flashback to Harvest Moon and is ever presently under development, which is exciting. While waiting on the multiplayer patch for Stardew Valley, I thought it would be fun to create a life-like 3D version of buildings and objects on Autodesk Maya.
I chose to start with Elliot's beach house, a relatively simple shape and colour to begin with and created a UV map by sampling the colours and then a bump map by making repeated wood patterns on Photoshop.
It was a little hairier than I expected. Pixels really push your imagination, because they can only tell you so much; for example, I questioned the door knob - does it have a keyhole? Is it even a knob? I guess I'll just make it a knob with a keyhole? The ropes holding the coconuts (again- I can't tell for sure, perhaps they are pots?) turned out to be the most difficult part to nail, but above is the whole shebang, hammered out in the end.
Which building do I take on next?
